Transitional Architecture for CHRISTCHURCH

The February 2011 Christchurch earthquake was a powerful natural event that severely damaged New Zealand’s second-largest city, killing 185 people in one of the nation’s deadliest peacetime disasters.  Canterburians have been profoundly affected materially and psychologically.

Unitec 1st year has participated in the ”Festival of Transitional Architecture”  in the heart of Christchurch. Starting with ideas sourced from community to propose solutions to the new urban setting, using temporary architecture as a mean for experimentation to discover what “transition” means.

The students have develop 2 projects in New Brighton, a neighborhood dramatically affected by the earthquakes.
Cost: 1000 NZD per project.
Materials: All the timber in one of the projects is reused from earthquake rubble.
Tools: Borrowed from New Brighton’s community.
Contruction time: 4 days
Incredible experience!
